As an important component of urban public transportation system, the urban rail transit hub, which contains traffic modes like UMT lines, routine buses, private cars, and non-motor vehicles, and integrates functions like transportation, commerce, businesses and entertainments, should serve the public as and multi-functional center by optimizing its layouts and functions under passengers' requirement. With the theories of public architecture, pedestrian flow and its service level, and based on the review of the layouts of rail transit hubs and designs of rail transit stations at home and abroad, discussions were made in this article concerning layout integrating and traffic interchange in rail transit hubs, and the methods were discussed for layout distribution and interchange modes selection.First of all, the characteristics of rail transit hubs were described in this article. Space within the hubs was divided in users' perspective, and possible ways were summarized for space and function integrating.According to the transportation functions of the hub, some in-depth discussions were made on the functional design of rail transit stations, and interchange arrangement and organizations among different traffic modes in the stations. The model for interchange modes selection was built on the basis of the discussion. This model, which is based on the flow of passengers, aims at calculating the largest passenger flow for each interchange state in an ideal period of time and under certain pedestrian service level through analyzing the relations among density, speed and volume of the passenger flow.In the end, Hai Yan Station, a rail transit hub in Ningbo, was introduced as a case to investigate. The design of station location and layout, interchange organization, and integrated development were completed to put the above-mentioned theories into practice.
