A Study On Color Design Of Urban Residential Buildings

As a dominant visual element, color plays a prominent role in such aspects as urban construction, urban history and culture inheritance, and improvement of living environment. The study of how to use color appropriately in urban residential buildings is a key step in improving urban living environment, and in ameliorating urban residents' quality of life. Therefore, color factor in architecture needs to be emphasized and further studied.Traditionally, color only serves as a supplementary element in architecture and considered only at the last phase of design, which makes it difficult to be integrated in architecture and hinders the mutual harmony between color and architectural structure. Besides, color is not only a passive element in architectural design; it is rather an active part. If its role could be fully and appropriately played, it will lead to surprising effects. Especially when other factors are constrained, such as space form, material, fund etc, color could help to play unique functions and solve practical problems.The thesis adopts the research methodology of type architecture color and takes urban residential buildings as research objects. Based on basic theories of architecture chromatics, color aesthetics, and color psychology, the thesis includes the following three parts:Firstly, the author looked back longitudinally the development status of Chinese residential buildings, and analyzed the typical residence forms and colors. Then, with specific examples in and abroad, the author studied the function of color in residential buildings, including the connection between color and residential building space and form, the psychological influence of architecture color to the residents, etc.Secondly, a research was done on the status quo of urban residential building colors. Through analysis of summary of the research, the author hopes to get valuable experiences to guide color design for residential buildings in the future.At last, some key points and principles for color design were summarized based on the former analysis and research, and some scientific and practical design methods and principles concerning color design for urban residential buildings were put forward.
