Project changes occur frequently due to the inherent complexity and unpredictable dynamics of construction engineering. Obviously, project changes do have significant influence on the price and duration of contracts. Successful project changes are helpful for completion of project goal. Thus, taking into account of project change during implementation is very important to ensure the project under control.Project change can be caused by many reasons, leading universality of the concept of project change. This thesis connects the theoretic analysis and practical experience. First, it investigates the basic concept, the categorization and the relationship among of project change and compensation. Next, based on a comprehensive literature review, we present a complete concept of project change, which provide criterion to define a clear scope of project change for project controller and deal with project change according to standard process. It will reduce the influence of project change on project goal.Project change is risky in engineering construction. This thesis starts with investigating direct cost, time extension and impact cost. Especially, it conducts a detailed qualitative analysis of the effectiveness loose caused by compensation. In addition, it describes the mechanism that project change lead to decrease of productivity.The calculation of change cost is the main concern. This thesis proposes an effective method to control change cost. This method provides a reliable support for ensuring change in controlled procedure.Lastly, this thesis presents the theories of project changes and the author's experiences. First, this thesis starts with the basic concept of project changes, and then analyzes the impact of project changes. Then, we present how to calculate cost and price, how to deal with change management. Furthermore, a comprehensive overview of the theories and management measures for project changes is described based on reviewing oversea achievements and problems of project changes. An important contribution of this thesis is the analysis of the problems existing in the topic of interest of local engineering construction. Finally, several new ideas and measures are proposed for an effective project change management.
