Multi-dimension Research On Waterfront Urban Design

Since 1960s, in countries all over the world, especially in developed countries of Europe and the United States, the researches on redevelopment of urban waterfront have been carried on, and great achievements have been achieved. In recent years, the researches on design and development of urban waterfront are also carried on in some domestic cities, but most of them are based on visual, aesthetic and functional point. The understanding of the long-term, complexity and multi-dimension process of the waterfront design and development is still inadequate.The article analyzes the research and practice of redevelopment of foreign urban waterfront, and sums up the causes, characteristics and objectives of urban waterfront. At the same time, we recognize the main mistakes in development of domestic urban waterfront, and deeply reveal the causes (the defects of force mechanism) of the phenomenon and the result (the problem, the potential crisis).To solve the problems above, the multi-dimension significance of urban waterfront is considered, on the base of which the theory explore is carried on. It analyzes the urban design dimension theory, adaptive urban design theory and urban design catalyst theory, and makes attempt studies on the reason of using these theories and subtle commons, in order to introduce the design idea of"multi-dimensional connectivity and linkage"to the development of urban waterfront. In view of the urban waterfront, the values, basic meaning and basic idea of "multi-dimensional connectivity and linkage" are built. And it is pointed out that "multidimensional connectivity and linkage" is the significance of modern urban waterfront design, and truly becomes the measures to control and guide the orderly development of the urban waterfront.Finally, based on the experimental studies on coastal areas of Sha&Li river in Luohe city, we enhance the characters of"long term, complexity, and multi-dimension process"in design and development of urban waterfront.In this sense, concept and practice can be integrate and makes recommendations for further research.
