Research On The Application Of The Fog Seal In Asphalt Pavement Preventive Maintenance

Asphalt pavement occupies a very important position in Chinese highways. In recent years, because of the varieties of natural factors and heavy traffic loads, asphalt pavement appears much premature damage, such as shedding,asphalt aging,micro-cracks and loosing and so on. Through cracks, water on the surface of the pavement infiltrates into the micro-structure layer of asphalt pavement, which will accelerate the damage of road. The premature damage of the asphalt pavement not only has bad impact to the road performance, but also shortens the life of the asphalt pavement. Asphalt pavement is in need of maintenance urgently, and preventive maintenance—fog seal is a effective way to resolve the problem in low-cost. This paper introduces the kind and characteristic of the premature damage in briefly. For the material characteristics of the fog seal, analyzes the mechanism of fog seal which closed the road closure and micro-cracks, as well as adhesive the loosing; at the same time, according to the features of the fog seal, analyzes the application of condition the fog seal.Through the comparative tests of the project entity for fog seal technology, it is shown that the method can effectively close cracks within 3㎜ in the surface of the pavement, and it can prevent or reduce the infiltration of the surface water, thus reduce water damage. As well, the technology can bond loosing material on the road and improve road appearance; it can improve road performance also. Pavement after treatment can get the effect as the new road.Research shows that, fog seal is a very effective preventive maintenance in asphalt pavement. It has good social and economic benefits, and fog seal is very significant advance asphalt pavement maintenance in present and future promotion in future.
