Since 1950's, with the Shanghai's industrial restructuring, the area along the Suzhou Creek has seen a reverse process of industrialization--- its industries, transport facilities and ports have been moved out from the center . This phenomenon once made people indifferent to the development of the Suzhou Creek, or even begin to doubt whether its mission had finished. The dissonances---the pollution of the river, the destruction of the original characters of the city's historic sites disrupt the pace of the sustainable development in Shanghai. In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the urban waterfront lots of historical importance. How to preserve the styles of the historical urban waterfront lots with consideration to the modern features of this era remains the grim issue of today that can not be avoided in the process of the urban development in the city. This paper selects the historic area along Shanghai's mother river (the Suzhou Creek) as the main research object. It makes a comprehensive survey and does empirical research, using the relationship between the Suzhou Creek and Shanghai's urban development as the main clue, focusing on the factors such as the spatial pattern , historical context, ecological factors and combined effects of the society. In this way the paper puts forward the general principles of protection and specific ways to protect the area along the river. On this basis, the paper goes on to discuss the specific patterns to update the historic features of No. 50 Moganshan Road (M 50), and expresses the author's own views on the room for the development of M50 and the ways to develop M50.
