The visual system of navigation simulator simulates the navigation environment and provides the sight for its users. The users can get large numbers of useful information from the visual system, which has been an important factor to evaluate the performance of navigation simulator. The scene in navigation simulator consists mainly of buildings along the waterway, piers and important aids to navigation, etc.. For some complex and irregular objects in scene, such as sculptures, it is difficult to model using the existing methods, and there is contradiction between the reality of modeling and efficiency of rendering.In recent years, the Billboard technology is widely used in the field of virtual reality. The technology adopts simple geometric rendering integrating texture mapping to simulate complex object. View morphing can generate the transiting images between two adjacent texture images. On the basis of discussing the existing methods of object modeling and rendering, a new method of modeling and rendering, concerning the sculpture-like object was proposed in the paper, which used Billboard technology with many texture images to simulate the observation effects from different directions. To avoid the sudden change of the images, the transiting images between two adjacent texture images were generated with view morphing. This method proposed in the paper has been applied in the visual system of navigation simulator. The results show that, the method can reduce the burden of modeling, improve rendering efficiency.
