The steel-plate shear wall is a new type of seismic shear wall system. It consists of reinforced concrete frame or steel frame with steel plate welded as in-fill panels. Results of this research show that the steel-plate shear wall has many advantages, e.g., it gives the system a substantial increase in stiffness, load-carrying capacity, ductility and energy dissipation, and seems to have a wide using foreground.UNTIL NOW, THICK PLATES WERE USUALLY USED IN BUILDING STRUCTURE DESIGN. THE PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF THIS RESEARCH SHOW THAT THE USE OF THICK PLATE IS NEITHER NECESSARY NOR DESIRABLE FOR SEISMIC RESISTANCE. PRESENTLY, ALMOST ALL OF THE STEEL SHEAR WALLS CONSTRUCTED IN AMERICA AND JAPAN WERE DESIGNED TO PREVENT PLATE BUCKLING. THUS, IT LEADS TO A THICKER PLATE DESIGN AND THE PLATE MAYBE DEVELOP A FRACTION OF ITS ACTUAL STRENGTH. UNLIKE COLUMS BUCKLING, BUCKLING OF THE PLATE DOES NOT MEAN THE FAILURE OF SYSTEMS, TREMENDOUS POSTBUCKLING STRENGTH CAN BE ACHIEVED IN A THIN PLATE SHEAR WALL AFTER ITS BUCKLING. THEREFORE , IT HAD BETTER USE THIN PLATE IN DESIGN.BASED ON EXPERIMENT RESULTS , TWO ADINA FINITE ELEMENT MODELS WERE ESTABLISHED IN THIS PAPER, THE LOAD-CARRING CAPACITY AND SEISMIC BEHAVOUR UNDER MONOTONOUS LOAD AND CYCLIC LOAD WERE EXPICTLY ANALYZED. THE RESULTS OF ANALYSIS SHOW THAT,WITH PROPER PANEL SLENDERNESS RATIO AND EFFECTIVE USE OF THIN STEEL-PLATE SHEAR WALLS TO RESIST SEISMIC FORCES IS POSSIBLE. ADDITION OF AN UNSTIFFENED THIN STEEL PLATE TO A FRAME GIVES THE SYSTEM A GREAT INCREASE IN STIFFNESS, LOAD-CARRYING CAPACITY, DUCTILITY AND ENERGY DISSIPATION. THERE IS GOOD AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE ANALYTICAL AND TEST RESULTS. FROM THE ANALYTICAL RESULTS, IT SEEMS REASONABLE THAT A BUILDING CAN BE DESIGNED USING THIN STEEL-PLATE SHEAR WALL SO THAT IT WILL RESPOND ELASTICALLY TO A MINOR SEISMIC EVENT OR HIGH WIND LOAD. WHEN SUBJECTED TO A SEVERE SEISMIC EVENT, WALLS WITH SLENDER PLATES TEND TO BE SAFER IN THIS INSTANCE SINCE A GOOD DEAL OF THE SEISMIC ENERGY WOULD BE ABSORBED BY THE PLASTIC DEFORMATION OF PLATE, THEREBY OFFERING PROTECTION TO THE MORE CRITICAL ELEMENTS OF THE STRUCTURE SUCH AS THE BUILDING COLUMNS.
