Small UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is being used widely in both military and civilian areas because of its characters such as low cost, light weight, small volume and better flexibility. And the control technology of small UAV has been the hot study and application in the world. Many UAVs are made in oversea and their function and performance are restricted. It is very important to develop the independent flight controlling system.The communication subsystem of UAV plays an important role in the flight controlling system because sensors and task data has to be send to GCS (Ground Control Station). And GCS can view and control UAV according to the data.The small UAV system and communication subsystem configuration has been researched and analyzed deeply in this article. And the communication subsystem was designed by using AT89C52, flight pose and position sensors and GSM modem.The module choice and interface design were discussed detailedly in this article. The GSM modem can guarantee the real time data transmission by using CSD mode. In the design the question of interface scarcity was resolved by using UART expanding device which is made in China. All of the devices are meet the requirement of small UAV design.Software of the communication subsystem was programmed. It can realize the sensors data gathering, data transmission between UAV and GCS. The software of GCS can display, store the wireless data and send command.The task carried out the design of the small UAV communication subsystem. And it makes better foundation for all of the project study and design.
