Targeting the XiangShan Road historic district under the background ofShanghai city, this thesis studies its urban space and the development of itsarchitectures, as well as explaining its reasons of shaping through various levels.This thesis studies the history of XiangShan Road historic district by dividing itsdevelopment into two phases: before 1920, and after 1920. During the first phase,through a series of analyses on urban space characters, it identifies this district as awestern high quality villas residential suburb; and also through the analyses on thecharacter of land utilization mode and initial development information, furtherdeduces that the historic district is shaped by the intervention of French concessiongovernment and also an integral development mode controlled by minority real estatedevelopment companies. Meanwhile, from the perspective of cultural self-identity, itcomprehends the concession policies of urban and architectures as the intervention onthe district and also as a function of society polarization. During the second phase,from the analyses on city form, land-value, infrastructures and transportation, thethesis studies the urbanization of this historic district. And it studies the changes ofthe XiangShan Road district consuming spaces and city spaces by reading inhabitantclasses alternately.Set the examples of the villa in this historic district, the thesis introducesdifferent architectural styles of western villas, as well as its meanings and culturaltransplantation. The architecture details in the appendix give a whole image of XiangShan Road architectures and the western life style by the cultural transplantation.
