Research On SBS Modified Asphalt Emulsion And Its Micro-surfacing Technology

Currently, lots of the constructed pavements in China have entered themaintenance period, therefore the research and promotion of economical,effective, ease-of-operation, preventative maintenance methods, are urgentlyneeded. Polymer modified asphalt emulsion and its micro-surfacing are leadingpreventive maintenance methods and effective ways for quick pavementsmaintenance. However, polymer modified asphalt emulsion used in micro-surfacinghas limited variety, the micro-surfacing technology is not yet mature, and thepreventative maintenance technology needs to be further recognized and acceptedby the road owners.According to the present situation of research and the existing problemson emulsion and its micro-surfacing technology, this dissertation provides anin-depth study on the following.1. Aiming at the high viscosity of SBS modified asphalt, the study conceptand process technology of adhesion-reducing emulsification is put forward, thatis, adding new additives during the production of SBS polymer modified asphalt. Anew SBS polymer modified asphalt emulsion and its production process have havebeen developed with the internationally advanced automated asphaltemulsification equipment. The new type of SBS modified asphalt emulsion is easierto produce than and has superior properties to regular modified asphalt emulsion.2. The performances of emulsion and polymer modified asphalt emulsion arenormally evaluated with the needle penetration, soft point, ductility of theirresidue by evaporation. This dissertation evaluates the properties of residueby evaporation of asphalt emulsion using the SHRP method, and compares it withthe regular evaluation systems.3. This dissertation also researches on design of micro-surfacing mixturesusing SBS and SBR modified asphalt emulsion as hinder separately, consorting thecharacteristics of aggregates and climate of Guangdong. Then the designed micro-surfacing mixtures have been successfully applied in testing section andthey have been approved and accepted by highway governor.
