A Study On Contemporary Regional Architecture Character Of Wuhan

As a dominating means of human being surviving and settling in the nature, architecture has integrated relations with specific places and the context. Regionality is one of the fundamental properties of architecture.With the globalization of the economy and frequent information exchanges, it's necessary to return to think highly of regionality of architecture. The sign of a city's architectural culture is regional architecture.We must acquire a better understanding of our own architectural culture, and make a systematic study of our local buildings and their backgrounds. We need to reconsider our design methods to create new designs that embody the spirit of regional culture.Synthesizing the research literatures about regional architecture, it can be considered that, the fundamental features of regional architecture embody: response to the natural conditions of local topography, physiognomy and climate; making use of regional materials, energy sources and construction techniques; absorbing the regional architecture culture accomplishments including building styles; having the comparati -ve uniqueness to other districts and distinctive economics.Wuhan has special climate, history, culture and economy, and has formed a few kinds of distinctive local building styles. But the regional buildings have no unique features on regional materials, energy sources, construction techniques and economics. So, this thesis comes up three characters of contemporary regional architecture in Wuhan city: adaptability to hot summer and cold winter climate,embodying the feature of historical architecture,response to pography.Based on the three features, this thesis analyzes their representation and talks about detailed design methods, and talks about some probable methods.Finally, it prospects the future of Wuhan regional architectural creation. For deriving from other regional culture of Wuhan, the essay provide some thoughts. It also points out those regional features the limit of time and space as well as continuous progress and self-renewal. The regional culture develops dynamically. We must scan the tradition and the new time critically, make effective judgment and choice.I wish it offer some useful reference in designing regional architecture works in Wuhan. Let's work hard together to create design works having the regional spirit and the time spirit. By our efforts, the essence of the traditional regional architecture can be conserved and the new regional architecture can develop actively.
