Today urban morphology varies, which not only makes the city layout become an interdisciplinary science but also makes the urban planning become more complex. It is no longer a good idea of decorating city by only putting leisure chairs or lightposts across the city. Instead, adding civic facilities that represent the characteristics and cultures of a city is a good and wise idea in the process of decorating a city."The city furniture" defines the objects that are intensively utilized in the city and is the most important modern urban environment element. It serves the city and also affects city's function and image; It serves the city people and also interacts with city people's works and lives. The continuous development of a city and its people's thoughts all contribute to the continuous improvement of public utility. The creation of scientific, perfect, aesthetic and user-friendly facility environment is the target of public utility..This article introduces city furniture, i. e, what's the function of city public utility in a city. We first describe the current status of the city public utility as well as the development change. Then we detail how public utility interacts with people's outdoors activity, and the interaction between city' public space and the design of the facilities. Based on this point, we carry out investigation to find out the design principle of the key elements of city public utility. At the same time, we apply research and consultation methodology to derive the basic principles and methods. Finally, we analyze the present reasons and problems that exist in the practical design and construction, and give suggestions and proposals for the systematical design and management of constructing city public utility...
