Study On Variable Message Signs Design

Variable message signs are components of traffic signs system in nature, are electronical, communicational and intelligent traffic signs. Variable message signs were used for more than ten years in China, but up to the present we have not a complete and systemic design criterion yet, and hard to avoid randomness and blindness in plan. This paper studies on the principle of system plan, display screen design and setting and location of Variable message signs, strive to improve the service performance of variable message signs, make them can farthest effect on solving urban traffic problem and improving road safety and condition, increase the capacity of road, and reduce traffic incident.This paper starts with the literature review of variable message signs and makes further studies on the design method and design parameters of variable message signs, aims at the special displaying technic of variable message signs, and proposes the way to improve the performance of variable message signs. Studies on the link select measure through analyzing the benefit of variable message signs, combined with the optimizing location model and experiential setting and location method. Studies on impact mechanism of variable message signs on the people, vehicle and road ,this paper presents the mathematical formulation to calculate the setting space in front of an exit variable message signs design on the basis of the modeling of diver's visual, the vehicle driving model and road environment model.Finally, this paper makes a case study on the variable message signs of west ring road 2 and west west ring road 3 and other main roads link to them in Beijing by using the above achievement and this case study proves the theory and methods presented in this paper have its feasibility.
