Traffic guidance system is an important subsystem of Intelligent Transportation Systems, in addition, Variable Message Signs (VMS) system is an important part of traffic guidance system. For its convenience, immediately, and well implementing effect, VMS are used widely in Transportation Information Publishing field, with the rapid development of intelligent transportation technology in China and other countries. VMS provide traffic guidance or misleading information to driver by way of graphic or letter signs, so it could guide the vehicle to the most reasonable path, avoid road congestion, especially ensure the drivers’travel efficiency and security, and plays an important role in the urban traffic management. VMS were used for quite a long time, but up to now, our country still have not a complete and systemic design criterion yet, and hard to avoid randomness and blindness in design.The thesis analyzes the study in domestic and overseas on the first, then study the screen’s features and related parameters of VMS; Through analyzing the cognitive quality of drivers and the readability of VMS, an evaluation index system for screen parameters design of VMS is established, the evaluation model of screen parameters design of VMS are proposed based on fuzzy neural network theory, combined with a example, evaluated some certain of screen design schemes for variable message signs; finally, a dynamic evaluation software of screen design schemes for VMS was developed based on the model which was mentioned above, this software get the evaluation value of comprehensive index and each index by emulated three screen design schemes; Through observing, comparing the simulation results, combined with the actual scene investigation, proves the methods presented in this paper have its feasibility.
