With the rapid development of world trade, port transportations are also increased very quickly, the number, size and tonnage of ships are changed with it. There are a lot of ships in harbour and near area, it makes the ship navigation's density increased and harbour's environment makes more dangerous and congested. Ships waste lots of time on entering and departing the harbour. Though the navigation equipment and capability have made great progress, the accidents such as collision are still more increased. The operation efficiency is very low. It makes the great reduce in economics and environment pollution and people's loss.It is therefore to understand the process of ship manoeuvring well for reducing the accidents. Ship off-line manoeuvring simulation system uses the autopilot to replace manual pilot, it can change the angle and speed with the environment change according to some rules, and simulate the actual ship manoeuvring process. It provides a method to simulate the ship navigation in port, and can be used to analysis and avoid the accidents.This paper takes the EU project "VRSHIPS" as background, make some research on the establishment of the ship manoeuvring mathematical model and simulation. Summarized the complete the mathematical model of the ship movement suitable for ships in harbour; Carry on the discussion to the ships track plan in the limit and collision environment, discuss the LOS navigation algorithm and autopilot, summarize the existing problems and further works, provide the new ideas and methods for developing the ship off-line manoeuvring simulation system.
