Performance-based design is a new building fireproofing design method based on fire safety engineering, which wields the principle and method of fire safety engineering, according to the specific building fire evolution character to decide the fireproofing needs, quantifying the fire risk.There are many atrium build or to be build in shopping malls, depots, hotels and office buildings.While atrium augments the charm of building,it brings great challenge to the design of smoke management.At present, there is a fire protection code GB50045-95, Code for Fire Protection Design of Tall Buildings on smoke ventilation design, but it is not adequately to direct some atrium smoke management design because of it's simplicity, roughness, which have been widely realized. So, this paper dedicates to research the application of Performance-based design to atrium smoke management system design , including research of the smoke flow character, establishing correlative design formula and summarizing a complete set of Performance-based design method.Zone model for engineering design, and, field modle for complex situation are established respectively.The boundary conditions were analyzed and the operation process was presented for field modell, and the space term be discretized in second order center difference, the time term be discretized in Runge-Kutter method and turbulence be simulated by LES method.Various factors of smoke flow, such as fire source, plume, ceiling jet, stratification and ventilation flow were analyzed, and correlative formula were established according the law and character of smoke.Summarized the basic method and approach of atrium smoke management system Performance-base design, viz.:ascertain the design objectives, quantify the performance target, design fire and then design and evaluate the scheme, at last descide the design scheme and report the design.Performance-based design of a office building smoke management is taken as engineering example.The design process and result have fully manifested the characters and practical engineering value.
