It is necessary to do research of the character of Kunming city basing on the analysis of problems in the city, research results and trends all around the world. The concept of the character of Kunming city was defined in this thesis. And it also raised "this thesis emphasized on arts and social science research and expressed humanism spirit in programming for the future as a designer who has humanist quality. It highlighted the importance of localization through thinking of the tidal wave of globalization. It discussed the construct of Kunming which should follow the successive and developmental trend of the city character. The spirit of the city should be the leader of material creativities. This could lead a harmonious environment. " Moreover, the history, folkway, and products of Kunming provide the evidence that the architectures affected the living. The achievements and defects of Kunming construction was discussed. The relationship between these points and character of the city also was explained. The historical reasons of forming character of Kunming and relationship between history and reality of Kunming were analyzed according to combination of several basic theories originated from social science, city programming, and architecture.
