A new ultrasonic data compression algorithm is studied in this thesis. The research is one of the most important parts of the national 863 key project–"Robert and Detection tecnology in ocean pipeline". The main task is to research and implement an effective data compression algorithm in ultrasonic pipeline inspection. Because of the very high sample rate and the length of the pipeline, the amount of the acquired data can be very large. In order to meet the relative small and expensive data storage device, it is very necessary to develop an effective way for ultrasonic data compression.The thesis analyzes the feature of ultrasonic data, and presents an incorporated wavelet and adaptive arithmetic coding data compression algorithm. This algorithm has very high compression rate and speed. It has mainly two parts: the lossy compression part and the lossless coding part. The first part is based on wavelet transform and the second part is implemented using adaptive arithmetic coding.
