It's very important to confirm the direction and location of a ship in sailing.There were two guide instruments, magnetic compass and gyro compass, as nautical navigation all along. Gyro is expensive, maintenance complication, and the key components such as gyro ball etc. are short-lived, which brings some questions to modern shipping automation. Magnetic compasses are necessary equipments for all ships.Stable digital magnetic compass was brought out with advanced technology which working based magnetic-sensing sensor and slope sensor in compliance acceleration law. Digital magnetic compass has many advantages such as shock resistance, offset stray magnetic field effect, direct interface with digital navigation system etc, which makes it precedent than "needle pointer" or gimbals compass.The key problem of acquiring heading datum from magnetic-sensing compass is deviation correction. In order to reduce heading error, principles of compass's deviation and declination were studied deeply, and the realization plan of deviation correction adopting optical simulation of bearing meter was given in the paper. The major task was research in correlated theory of digital compass, software and hardware design of the system. And a schematic prototype instrument was designed finally. Some suggestions and vistas were proposed to towards some unsettled sections of the design at the present time.
