With the development of society, the conflict between lack of bandwidth and the growing users gets worse. There are two important solutions to the trouble, one is to improve the efficiency of bandwidth and the other is to exploit new source for communication. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a digital modulation technique which has so many features such as high efficiency of bandwidth, fast data transmission. The communication on low voltage power line based on OFDM can utilize the existing low voltage power line network to communicate whose cost is low and convenient. It is a new method of high speed communication, and the research on OFDM and its application on low voltage power line has great significance.Power line communication uses power line as communication media for data transmission and information exchange. With the advancement of the technologies of modulation, transmission and signal procession, power line communication is developing all the way; Multi-carrier modulation substitutes for single carrier modulation and data rate increases from a few Kilobits to several Megabits. At present, power line communication comes into an era developing with high speed. Because power line communication has several advantages, such as no need of new wire and low cost, it has drawn a lot of attentions in the fields of intelligent home LAN and broadband access. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a critical technology for the realization of broadband power line communication. It is a type of multi-carrier modulation and a technology of multiplex. OFDM utilizes several sub-carriers which are orthogonal with one another to transmit information, thus, the utilization of frequency band is enhanced greatly and the frequency selective fading and time variation in power line channel can be overcome effectively.The thesis introduces the conception and the development of power line communication first, then, studies the characteristics of the power line channel, sets up a channel model for use. For the further comprehension of OFDM, the thesis introduces the principle of OFDM briefly, analyzes the advantages to apply OFDM in power line communication, and discusses some critical technologies in OFDM. We also set up a power line communication simulation model based on OFDM by MATLAB/SIMULINK, simulating some data and system analysis about the critical technologies of OFDM and the whole simulation system.
