This paper takes a further insight into the ship maneuvering with lateral thruster on the base of the ship maneuvering mathematical model on water surface.According to Japan MMG's separated modeling theory, the formulas for calculating hull hydrodynamic force, rudder force and propeller force are presented, and the hydrodynamic interaction among them; A integrated shallow water and low speed mathematical model for simulating ship maneuvering with lateral thruster is presented in this paper, and lateral force is added to this mathematical model as well. The paper applied the calculating method-the Runge-Kutta method to calculate the equation of maneuvering mathematical model, and the ship maneuvering simulation researches are carried out by use of the MATLAB's Simulink Toolbox in this paper. Adopt the method of quantitative and qualitative analysis, the thesis inquires into maneuvering efficiency of the lateral thruster correspond to the different operating conditions of zero speed, low speed and crabbing motion, and the vessel's crabbing motion under the propeller, the lateral thruster and the rudder's united control as well as the regression formula.The study has obtained the following conclusion: maneuvering efficiency of the lateral thruster is mainly related to velocity. The effective lateral force of lateral thruster and gyration, correct course and crabbing motion of the vessel will distinctly decrease along with the increase of the velocity, gyration, correct course and crabbing motion of the vessel, the control of the ship berthing or unberthing maneuvering will be improved under the propeller, the lateral thruster and the rudder's united control.The research provides with the reference for the pilots and captains on safe control of the vessel berthing or unberthing maneuvering and narrow channel. It brings forward a new research field in safety assessment of vessel operation, and ship maneuvering simulator.
