Research On Universal Design Of Toilet And Bathroom Of House For The Aged

The old-age society has hit the China. However, the cause for old is just at it starting stage, especially in the design of toilet and bathroom. Due to various factors, Universal Design of the toilet and room for the old is essential to satisfy more users. And fortunately, Universal Design provides a way to solve this problem.The toilet and bathroom for the aged is investigated in this paper. The art design is considered as the standpoint. With the combination of Universal Design Theory, Ergonomics, Gerontology and Physiology for the aged, this paper systematically analyses the physiology, psychology and recreation pattern for the old person. In order to seek the corresponding solutions in design, empirical survey has been taken and analyzed in detail to investigate the inner-most problems both in design and use in the toilet and bathroom for the old. Based on the findings in survey, the promotion of subjective happiness is proposed to be the main mentality for the design. After confirming the conclusion of researches beforehand, the paper proposes the principles and methods for the design of toilet, and also computes and amends the physical-size parameters of the aged. Finally, three design cases, with their accessories correspondingly, have been carried out to show the lightness of the design principles and methods we suggested in this paper.The paper takes the age's needs as the design core. Based on the analysis the needs and man-machine data of the ages, as well as the space sanitary equipment, the environment and the ancillary facilities, the paper gives the characteristics as security, comfortableness, one-self supports, easy-to-use and flexibility to be the guides in designing the toilet and bathroom for the old persons. Through out the paper, the people-oriented design and care for the age are highlighted, which could be help for making the age's life more comfortable and building a harmonious society.
