The phenomenon of parametric rolling occurs when roll motion of a ship increases dramatically in a short period of time coupling with large heave and pitch motions in head or near head waves with particular frequencies. Some mathematic models based on Mathieu theory can simulate the occurrence and magnitude of parametric rolling efficiently. In this research the mathematic model recommended by ITTC was employed to simulate the parametric rolling in longitudinal regular waves. The empirical calculation of the roll damping and fast simulation of nonlinear GM-Variation are presented. The numerical solution is the prediction of occurrence and magnitude of parametric rolling. The proposed method is applied to a RO/RO ship model tested in Italian INSEAN model basin and a container ship model tested in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The comparison between the simulation results and the test results validates the proposed simulation method.
