Power line communication (PLC) uses power line as communication media for data transmission and information exchange. With the advancement of the technologies of modulation and signal procession, PLC has been developed greatly. With the technology of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) using in PLC, the reliability and speed of PLC transmission arrive at a new height. There are many PLC applications, such as internet access, Home-Bus for making the intelligent building, automatic meter reading and so on.The work is as follows: The characteristics of the power line channel are studied, which contain multi-path attenuation, impedance changes and many varying noise. Then, the power line channel model established by M.Zimmermann and K.Dostert is chosen. At last it is simulated by MATLAB software; OFDM is the key technology to realize high speed PLC. First, the theory, realization and key technology of OFDM are analyzed and studied. Finally, the PLC based on power line channel is simulated by MATLAB; Many key problems of an OFDM system have not been solved yet, including high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) which blocks the wide application of OFDM technique. How to reduce the value of PAPR has become the important aspect of OFDM technology study. Based on the analysis of many existed methods of reducing the value of PAPR, a new method based on clipping to reduce PAPR is proposed in this paper. Finally The simulation is realized by MATLAB; Based on the PLC solution of MAXIM corporation's IC which are MAX2986 and MAX2980, a PLC modem is designed and tested; The MAXIM PLC modem is applied to design a new automation metering system which can realize internet access and automation meter reading.
