The robust design method is a kind of engineering design method which developed in recent years, the guidelines are the use of the situation when factors (causes) change in a small scale as a result of modest deterioration variables (results) do not affect the sensitivity of product performance, quality and cost make the best integrated into the design to improve product quality and reduce costs. Therefore the essence of the robust design is an optimization problem.With the development and application of the computer technology, optimizes and the CAD technology, the robust design method has also been considerable development in our country. Especially the research on the applying robustness on the optimization design of the products is more and more. But at present how to combine the design method with application software in order to realize the rapid design research is still relatively rare, according to the materials that author have looked up to the application of a scientific calculating software MATLAB on robust design methodology is rarely available. So the author attempts to do some exploration work in this respect.This text is on the basis of combining the development of engineering robust design in the recent years, having summarized the research situation and development trend of the robust design, having introduced MATLAB which is the large scale scientific calculation software and relatively prevail at present to robust optimizing design method, attempts to combine the two together, in order to achieve the goal of learning from other's strong points to offset one's weaknesses each other between the outstanding design method and advanced computing technology.The text uses MATLAB optimization toolbox for solving the problem of robust optimization design of the gear wheel transmission for the first time, and gives the corresponding algorithm procedures. Examples and results show that the method is convenient and feasible, prevents multifarious engineering algorithmic language programming during the routine calculation procedure, having save time as well as raised the efficiency, and the result is robustly reliable.
