As the technology of substation automation is developing rapidly, the manufacturers all over the world promote various IEDs(Intelligent Electronic Devices) of the substation automation system subsequently. Due to the network and communication protocol utilized by manufacturers are incompatible to each other, it is necessary to convert the protocols to ensure different manufacturers'IEDs being integrated into one substation system. The conversion of the different protocols is troublesome and will increase the cost and reduce the reliability of the system.Therefore both the vendor and the vendee expect some authorities to institute an unified standard to qualify interoperability of the IEDs from different vendors.IEC61850 is exactly an international standard about the substation automation communication system. IEC61850 instituted by IEC TC57 was completely published in 2005 after discussion for several years. The main purpose of publication about IEC61850 is to qualify interoperability of the IEDs from different vendors and simplify their integration into one system.What has been done in the paper concerns IEC61850. Firstly, the background and the present research situation of IEC61850 are introduced, and then the advancement of IEC61850 is summarized. Afterwards, an overview upon IEC61850 standard series is given, then the advantages of IEC61850 have been analyzed by comparing the communication structure of the substation based on IEC61850 with the old substation's, and then the substation communication mode based on IEC61850 is proposed.Because of the hugeness and complexity of IEC61850 standard series, the paper takes the following two parts as its main work, one of which is the IEC61850-6(configuration description language for communication in electrical substations related to IEDs), another of which is IEC61850-7(communication networks and systems in substations). The object-oriented technology and the modeling approach of the IED are described, function modeling and UML(Unified Modeling language) description of IED are accomplished in the paper. After those, the date class is realized by C# language. Then the configuration of the substation and IED is researched based on SCL(Substation Configuration Language) and the configuration file is compiled.
