Optimal selection of 500kv transmission line is vital to Chinese electrical network security, economical and environmental protection running; it is also difficult to hydraulic Engineering reconnaissance and construction, especially in west regions. Traditional methods and techniques of line selection cannot meet the demand of long distance and multifactor. One solution is to use the relative experience and researches of RS and train and road GIS in all over the world. Based on mastering the features of 500kv transmission line, by analyzing, transplanting, and optimizing existing results, finally establishes the favorable index system of transmission line election. In the project of 500kv transmission line from Jiulong to Shimian, major creative outcome obtained as follows.(1) Systemically summarize the application situation and development trend of optimal selection of transmission line, by contrasting transmission line, road and pipe, replant and optimize the election models and methods of roads and pipes, establish the election models and methods of transmission line.(2) Initially establish an appraisal index system of transmission line that suit to the western Sichuan, the qualitative and quantitative methods of appraisal index ingredients and index factors are given. In this paper, the project of optimal selection of transmission line should do as the flow "digitalizing appraisal area information→generating appraisal information grid→calculating appraisal information→initially drew up the multi-plans→fluctuating operation to determine the single plan→generating the buffer region of single plan→informing engineering geology sub area →transmission line route→transmission line inflexion→partial plan contrast→conforming tower base position→examining base point on the spot".(3) Use ETM images to interpret linear constructers, analyze the stress concentration region, and investigate land use types and residential area distribution.(4) There will be many other transmission lines in the research region. This 500kv transmission line project is a special example that can serve for 750kv and other linear projects. Research results are worth to improve and extend.(5) Research results are valuable to establish GIS framework in some place where terrain and physiognomy are complex.
