Urbanization is an inevitable consequence of social productivity development, and the urbanization level is also one of the embodiments of economy development in one country or region. However, fast urbanization brings about a series of problems, such as environment pollution, traffic block and housing shortage. Therefore, how to construct a well-designed sustainable urban with high efficiency and high-quality environment is becoming one of the hot topics for landscape ecologists worldwide. Urban landscape ecology provides urban landscape planning, design and management with the theoretical foundations through implementing the theories and methodologies of landscape ecology. In Addition, some new ways and scientific proof are provided to solve urban issues for urbanization strategies.Ziyang is a typical mid-scale city in hilly region of Sichuan Basin, and now it is experiencing a fast urban expansion as other cities in China. The distribution of old city limits the city's further development. Hence, the flourishing development of the city requires well-designed optimization program for urban landscape. Based on the principles of landscape ecology and GIS, new methods for solving the problems of expansion and conflicts between unreasonable landscape pattern and city's sustainable development were discussed in this paper.
