The fault recorder is one of main equipment which provides data to analyze many kinds of power sytem states. It has very important practical value for operators to analyze the system condition under normal and fault states and treat faults according to the data gathered by the recorder.Firstly, this paper introduces the function and developing status of fault recorder,then disadvantages and developing trend of the recorder are analyzed. Because the need of gathering the fault signal on the DC power supply at the transformer's substation side, a fault recorder which is used to gather the high speed fault signal is designed.Firstly, the blue print is designed using the thinking of multi-hiberarchy which means that there is a data acquisition equipment at the bottom and a computer at the top. the top and the bottom communicate in serial model. This paper uses TMS320VC5509 as the controller of the data acquisition equipment. Relevant hardware is devised based on DSP's high speed of computing and powerful ability of data processing, and the software is written by the thinking of modularization.The data gathered by the equipment is saved by CCS's function of file output ,then the data is showed by the MATLAB's function of drawing. The design of the equipment's correctness is proved in contrast with the real wave,and the equipment's functions of data Acquisition,store and transmission are proved.Because Visual Basic is powerful in user windows'designing and data-base management,the software on computer is compiled with Visual Basic ,and data-base is set up by Access to deposit fault data.The software's functions of RS232 serial communication between data acquisition equipment and computer,management of data-base and drawing of fault wave are validated by experiments.
