The Study Of The Rietveld Schroder House

This thesis focuses on the study of the Rietveld Schroder House, an icon of theModern Movement in architecture. The study examines how the Schroder house cameinto being, and analyses factors that are relative to the House. It emphasizes thecontext of Dutch modernism. At the same time, the thesis summarizes the SchroderHouse's historic significance in the Modern architecture history, and discusses theproblems in the house.The quality of the Schr?der House lies in its having produced a synthesis of thedesign concepts in modern architecture at a certain moment in time. In this regard, itcan be considered not only a manifesto of the De Stijl movement but also an icon ofthe Modern Movement in architecture. Since 1980s archival sources become morefreely available, which has led to success of the new historiography of De Stijl,however, there are a few monographs on the Rietveld Schroder House. theseresearches of the De Stijl provide important information on the house.The Rietveld Schroder House reflects the conflict between the conventionalculture and modern culture, as well as the fusion of the different ideas in Europe ofthe 1920s. The schroder House was the first building in the Rietveld's works. Hemade the house based on the same principles as the Red Bule Chair. The thesisanalyses how Rietveld combined abstract aesthetics and practical function to search amode of modern life, cooperating with Mrs. Schroder.The thesis compares the Schroder House with other significant buildings of theearly modern architecture, and clarifies the reason why the house did not become thestandard pattern which has been extended widely in residence architecture, in order toevaluate the house impersonally.
