As the main inland waterway in china, the Xijiang River in Guangxi province impeded the water transportation. It is necessary to research how to reasonable plan the waterway exploration project. The main work of this paper was to study the potential of waterway development in Xijiang River from Guiping to Wuzhou. On the basis of theoretic investigation about the fine reach and the hydraulic geometry in the waterway engineering, the method to determine the waterway level of a natural river was proposed. The research results can be used in the waterway planning. The main conclusions are as follows:(1) The natural conditions are feasible for waterway development in Xijiang River from Guiping to Wuzhou. Because of the growth comparatively slow, the waterway lower in rank was not suitable for inland navigation development in the Zhujiang River basin, which should be upgraded.(2) Based on morphological characteristics of fine reach, being applied on the river reach from Guiping to Wuzhou on Xijiang River, 18 fine reaches were selected. Their stream wise hydraulic geometry formulation and the correlation of mean water depth with channel depth in section under the lower water level was successfully established(3) Channel dimensions were constrained by river natural conditions. To a certain degree, fine reach reflect the navigation potential. The greatest possible degree of navigation channel improvement should be taken fully into account, when planning the waterway project.(4) In an inland waterway planning, the exploitable potential of the waterway resources should be evaluated from the view of river natural conditions at first, and then the implement scheme can be outlined according to the need of the national economic growth.(5) Based on hydraulics, river mechanics and waterway engineering, with the Fine reach and hydraulic geometry, methods to determine the exploitable potential by waterway regulation was proposed, which can be used to show the waterway level.(6) The greatest potential grade of the waterway from Guiping to Wuzhou on Xijiang River was the third class by channel improvement. Canalization project can be choice for higher grade. It is happened to be a Changzhou Reservior on the stocks in that river. Combine with comprehensive treatment, the waterway is possible to get the first grade.
