Fault location in high voltage transmission lines has been being difficult problem in power system operation, the fault location network play an important role in the line repair and power restoration. Fast and accurate fault location can contribute to the secure and economic of the overall power system. An overview for all methods of fault location by traveling wave is presented in this paper. But some methods of fault location need a high-speed sampling unit or change connecting of power system cause some influence to power system normal operation. A traveling wave sensor is designed, a fault location with traveling wave for network system based GPS is developed in the paper.The theory of traveling wave transmission is analyzed in the paper. The model with distributed parameters has been set up and verified by EMTP simulation tests. It is founded that CT and VT can transform the head part of traveling wave without time delay and the output and input signals have the same polarity.Recording the time of fault traveling wave's surge arriving is the key technique of fault location. Use the specially designed passing though sensor to capture the signals of current and voltage. Based on the precision interlaid between high precision oscillator and GPS-clock, the device for high precision clock is implemented.The structure of fault location is introduced in this paper; the fault location system is tested in a real power system. Testing results show that the fault locator has high precision and the fault location error is no more than 120m. It can be implemented easily and cheaply. And the real application project of Zhuzhou power system is introduced; the project of this system is put forward, and simulated it by EMYP.The fault location system with traveling wave for power system can locate the all fault, the theoretical analysis and experimental result proved that the fault location system described here is precise and effective, and the system will improve the reliability and efficiency of power system. The system contributes a lot to the analysis of the network protect.
