Taking Goupitan high arch dam on the Wujiangdu river as a practical example and focus on dam base rock under abutments of the dam with geological defects, the influence degrees is studied to the arch dam deformation and stability due to the defects by means of geological way and the nonlinear finite element method, The main contents are as follows:(1) The relevant data of geological defect in the rock body of the abutments has been collected in detail. An large number of geology to analysis maps has been made by geological method. The geological defect position is accurately gotten the orientation in the body of rock of the abutments.(2) According to surveying and excavating, it is proved up that diastrophism between the layers for different height, properties and scale of the geological defect such as weathering, strap of dissolving and filtration etc.. By the analogy laws of the experiment to project, the mechanics parameters are provided of dam foundation , abut rock body and weak strap, and the geological material parameter are offered in reason for designing and calculating. The analysis results in geology shows that the abutment rock is good to resisntane the body to slip , however the deformation stability for the dam is more seriously than that slipping by geological defect since structure, weathering and corrosion.(3) Arch dam loads go through the body to abut rock of two banks, and stability balance is depend on reaction at the arch ends. From that, the typical flat tangent planes have been chosen which reflect the difference of relative position to the rock defect and dam foundation as section for calculation. And the nonlinear finite element method is employed to calculate.In order to research the influence degree to the arch dam from geological defect, in practical and sensitive, the two material parameters in the layer are applied respectively to solve the weak intermediate layer problem, one is real defect and the rest is intact rock material.(4) According to the result of calculation of different schemes, the influence degree for dam stress, rock body plasticity district and deformation caused by weak intermediate bed are discussed. It shows: weak intermediate layer has the adverse effects to dam displacement, stress and plastic zone which need to be repaired by project way. Then these can help us how to deal with geological defect of abutments, what to be reinforce zone of defect rock, offer the basis for further theory analysis.
