Since the 1990s, China's phenomenal economic growth has raised the standard of living and broadened the people's perception. The garden villa, with its notion of healthy and progressive way of living, easily accepted by the burgeoning middle and upper classes of society, has rapidly developed in tandem with rapid urbanization of its many of its cities.Particularly in Suzhou, where within ten years, it has become one of leading cities in China in terms of economic production and high standard of living, the desire for higher quality of life reflects the greater demand for garden villas. The study of such garden villa design becomes especially pertinent.Traditional dwellings in Suzhou are highly representative of the Jiangnan region. Classical Suzhou gardens are also an important part of our national cultural heritage. Because of the strong preservation movement in Suzhou, and the strong influence of traditional culture in contemporary life still, the greatest issue remains the transformation of this tradition within the framework of rapid modernization. This essay tries to investigate the relationship and effects of the strategies involved in the adaptation and transformation of traditional Chinese residential architecture in contemporary commercial garden villa developments.
