Recently, topology optimization is the most challenging and hot, as well as difficult research topic in structure optimization. It usually needs to determine many more parameters than size optimization and shape optimization. However, it can be obtained more benifit so that it is more attractive for design engineer. With the development of this theory, it is being applied to engineering practice gradually. In this paper the basic theory of topology optimization is studied, and a series of suggestion and methods are put forward, which is applied to arch dam optimization design. The chief research and work are as follows:1. The mathematical models of topology optimization on homogenization method, variable-density method and variable-thickness method are analyzed and compared, and their advantages and disadvantages are also discussed in detail.2. The specific methods of hydro-structure-optimization design are studied by using the homogenization method often used in topology optimization. On the basis of microstructure cell, the mathematical model of homogenization method and numerical calculation of finite element are explained.3. According to the arch dam features, with the object of the minimum volume, its proper spatial distribution form is studied, and the topology optimization of arch dam with the distributed loading is researched. Based on the finite element analysis software of ANSYS, a universal topology optimization program is exploited, which realizes topology optimization of arch dam from the point of the view of technique.4. By using topology optimization theory, arch dam form optimization design is made. 2-D horizontal ring topology optimization and 3-D structure topology optimization of some arch dam are accomplished. All the results are satisfied, which indicates that the continuum structure topology optimization method is fit for the arch dam optimization design.
