TAZ (Traffic Analysis Zone) is designed for the transportation research;it's the foundation of many traffic models. The Traffic Analysis Zone focuses on representing the current and the forecast traffic sratus. One city can be divided into dozens or hundreds of TAZs. May different quantity division cause different quality of traffic forecast? How much difference among them? Are there any principles can ensure the acceptable result within different conditions? This report is tring to find out the difference through reshaping the TAZs.In this paper, attraction and trip distance is selected as the estimation guidelines, in different TAZ division analysis. After calculating under utopian data and the urban data, the result show that the factors influence those guidelines included the shape, the count, the area, the traffic impedence index, and the population distribution within TAZs. This report hopes to give some advice to the decision-maker how the different TAZ divisions influence the traffic analysis.I use ESRI's ArcGIS9.1 as the platform of data interoperability, and seek help to C++ programming language to deal with the numerous data calculation, then implement matrix calculation with Mathworks's MatLab software package. During this research, I compare several tools which may also implement TAZ calculation, including the OD Matrix tools in ESRI's ArcGIS and some other software packages, and pointed out their advantage, shortage and the main difference among them.
