Currently, mostly container terminals practical throughput exceed the designed capacity at large, and some even great disparity, which make the container yard and intermodal system be the bottlenecks. The berth capacity formula offered by Design Code of General Layout for Sea Port is not suitable. It is necessary to research the container berth capacity for the layout, design and management at port. Depend on the port statistic data of operation, use the theory and methodology of road traffic capacity for reference, based on the container terminal characteristic , put forward the new berth capacity formula. The main contents and results in this thesis as follows:(1) Studies the loading containers information of the typical fleet, analyzes the width of quay crane, establishes the relation between the vessel length and the maximum lay amount of the cranes, which can be applied to calculate the maximum quay crane quantity on the berth.(2) Based on the vessel delay at harbor ,inducted the level of berth service to measure the port service quality ,and suggest applying two grade level of service to guide decision-making in investment.(3) According to the complex components of vessel and handling volume, studies the correlation among vessel patterns, handling volume and handling efficiency, then analyzes each rectify coefficient to the amount of quay crane and productivity.(4) Contrast with the berth capacity formula offered by Design Code of General Layout for Sea Port, Hongkong and Korea, put forward the strongpoint and deficiency in each expressions.(5) Built the basic, potential, designed and practical berth capacity formula of different period of time.
