The actual throughput of container berth does exceed that of original design in Chinese container terminal operation at present. It has been one of the core problems about how to exactly explain the phenomenon and further calculate the throughput capacity of container terminal reasonably which is paid much attention to by port and specially by planning department and needs to be solved urgently in order to ensure that the port can meet demand for container transport without overlapping investment and the waste of resources in the future.In present paper, the success and shortcomings of the current berth capacity formula of the container terminal are analyzed first, and then the factors which influent berth capacity are analyzed. It is pointed out that berth capacity is dynamic and variation with the changing influencing factors and with the professional development of container transportation, some parameters of the berth design capacity formula have changed, and the systematic effect of the berth capacity of the container terminal is occurred with the features of container operations. And then the impact of the three major aspects which affect the berth capacity-the arrival interval distribution of liner, the unitization of container berth, the trend of larger-sized container vessel, is studied in theory and quantitatively analyzed deeply. Some of the inherent reasons why the actual throughput of container berth does exceed that of original design are revealed. Finally, taking the Yangshan deep-water port with five berths as an example, the value range of the design parameters is modified according to the operational status of Yangshan port. The systematic effect of the berth capacity of Yangshan port is analyzed. Based on the above, the berth capacity is re-calculated, and the result accords with the actual situation of Yangshan port. The result shows that the research methods in this paper can provide reference for the planning, design and operation of the container berths, and provide a new path for calculating the berth capacity of the container terminal even more reasonably.
