As the 3th generation electric light source, High Presure Sodium(HPS) lamp has such merits as high luminous efficiency, long life and so on. It is widely used in the illumination for roads and bridges. Traditional ballast components of inductance ballast has some disadvantages which include large volume, high self consumption, low power factor and difficult to adjust. Therefore, in order to meet the development of "green lighting program", it is absolutely necessary to develop a new kind of electronic dimmable saving energy controller, which has such advantages as high power factor, low self consumption, light adjustable and remote control, for the sake of lighting according to one's needs. Now days, the electricity is in short supply, so the new product is needed both in the view of society and economic benefit. The article includes the following parts, the study and design of Active Power Factor Correction (APFC) circuits, the study of inverter circuit and design of control circuit, the study of ignition circuit, the study of dimmable technology, the design of protection circuit, the design of dimming interface and so on. On the basis of these studies, dimmable saving energy controller will be invented. With a lot of studies, we designed 250W HPS dimmable saving energy controller, which has the characters of high power factor, small volume, light adjustable. L6561 APFC chip is adopted, and also IR2153 is the chip for inverter circuit.
