Following the development in technologies of automatic meter reading, embedded system, GSM/GPRS network, and counter-electricity theft measures, this thesis puts forward a microcontroller-based wireless acquisition & monitoring system for electrical energy measurement, focusing on the present problems of difficulty in meter-reading and severity in electricity theft. The low-cost mobile phone is used as controller and display, the cost of system is decreased. Also, character-embedded JPEG picture and pyroelectric infrared detection for intruders have been realized and integrated in the system. 1) Improvements have been made to the first prototype to overcome its weakness, the second pro-type has been developed for field operation. 2) ABB Kwh-meter readout has been acquired after dealing with the communication protocol. 3) Characters have been embedded in the JPEG picture after a study has been made in the JPEG compression/decompression, and water-marking technology. 4) Illegal intruders have been successfully detected after application of pyroelectric infrared sensor. At last, counter electromagnetic interference measures have been taken both in hardware and in software to assure the reliable operation. The meter reading and monitoring system developed in this project can be used in electric energy measurement and in other remote wireless monitoring application as well. It can find wide applications and acquire greater economic and social benefits.
