Excavation engineering is an old but still fashionable issue in geotechnical engineering. The main contents of excavation engineering including engineering geology ,rock and soil mechanics and foundation engineering have been existing for seventy years.The publication of K.Terzaghi's soil mechanics and engineering geology in 1920's marked the systematization and establishment of this discipline,which prompted researches of scholars and technicians from different countries.In 1940's,Terzaghi and peck et al. proposed total stress method by which stability degree of excavation and supporting loads are preestimated.So far this theory has been applied with many improvements and modifications.In 1950,s,the method to analyze upheave of deep excavation was given.Since 1960's,monitoring with instruments has begun application in Oslo,and subsequent plentiful monitoring data increased prediction accuracy,then,code for directing excavation was suggested in 1970's.The design and construction of excavation engineering were underway in China in 1980's.The rules and criteria about excavation engineering have been drawn since 1990's.So far,the design methods have developed from strength failure limit state to deformation limit state,and the design theories have shifted from traditional theories of C.A.Coulomb and W.J.M.Rankine to theories considering shoring structure's space effect and nonlinear soil pressure.The activities of human beings in civil engineering promote the development of excavation engineering.Especially in this century,along with the emerging of a large number of high-rising buildings and skyscrapers and the continuous outcome of undergroung engineering,the requirements for excavation engineering are becoming higher and higher,and problems in this field are becoming more and more,and the probability of accidents is still at a high level.Shoring engineering of deep excavation is the necessary part of temporary structure during the construction of foundation due to its low safety stock and high failure risk.Through practical engineering projects,the work performance of soil anchor and technique of construction are discussed.Several factors influencing the ultimate bearing capacity of anchors are discussed.Combined with the pratical engineering projects,the slope stability during the excavation of deep foundation pit and its hazard and failure are illusrated.Consided the complicated and various situations in practice,monitoring in construction must be carried out.
