Railway takes on the main task of the passenger and freight transportation in our country. Safety is an important request for the railway transportation. The crash accident will destroy the vehicle structure seriously and cause the passenger injured. The crashworthiness technology of the locomotive and vehicle has been researched overseas, the energy absorption standard of the locomotive and vehicle in the crash process is drawn, and the crashworthy structure is designed according to the crash accident investigation, the crash simulation and the crash test. In order to improve the crashworthiness performance of the locomotive and vehicle in our country, combining with DF8B locomotive, the paper simulates the crash process using the finite element software ANSYS/LS-DYNA, and designs the crashworthy DF8B locomotive carbody.In order to improve the simulation precision and efficiency, firstly the basic mechanical equation used in the simulation of the locomotive and vehicle crash, the finite element discretization of the locomotive and vehicle structure, the thin shell element theory, the explict integral algorithm, the strain and stress relationship of the elastic and plastic material are introduced. Secondly the foundation of the crash finite element model of the locomotive and vehicle, the control of the element discretization and the gridding density, the definition of the contact interface, the hourglass control, the mass scaling and the subcyling etc. are discussed, the effect of these parameters on the simulation precision and efficiency are found. Afterwards, the crash process of the thin-walled structure is simulated to find the effect of the cross section, the thickness and the pre-deformation on the crash capacity, and the axial impact deformation of the circinal tube is analyzed in the theoretical way, the axial impact deformation of the square tube and subulate tube are analyzed by simulation.
