Crown gear coupling is a kind of small-scale gear coupling developed in the resent 30 years, which can reliably work with inclination of axes. Crown gear coupling can compensate the radial and axial displacement and angular displacement between axes. Its structure is compact. It can transmit motion reliably and accurately and avoid the stress concentration in sharp corner of teeth. So this coupling's carrying power is large. This paper comes from the project of "Finite Element Strength Analysis of the external and internal teeth of Gear Coupling"from Qisuyan Engine and Vehicle Technics Institute. The aim of the subject is to design and check the strength of the gears of crown gear coupling from the Beijing subway and to analyse the teeth by means of 3D FE elastic contact method. The result can numerically and theoretical support the design and manufacture of crown gear coupling. The main work of this paper includes: ① The calculation of the structure parameters and 3D modeling in I-DEAS of the crown gear coupling are carried on. ② The pro-processing program for FE elastic contact analysis of gear coupling is developed through Visual Fortran. The program can generate the model for calculation and input data. ③ When the inclination of axes does not exist, the FE contact analysis of the meshing gears is carried out by the means both of the FE elastic contact analysis program developed by our own lab and of the I-DEAS software. The result is post-processed. ④ When the inclination of axes exists, the FE contact analysis of the meshing gears is carried out through the I-DEAS software to get the displacement field, stress field and contact stress of tooth faces.
