Because of its beauty, flexibility, compositive functions and distinct ecosystem effect, the "Hanging Garden type" habitations can satisfy most requirements of city livelihood and comfort environment.There is not a clear definition to the "Hanging Garden" in the architectural research. The author regard it as a kind of outdoor place, which could be emplaced virescences. The form of the place include balcony, terrace, veranda, aisle, public hall and so on.The issue of living environment has been one of the problems that dwellers concern most. The "Hanging Garden" type habitations draws on principles and methods from ecology and sustainable development theory, follow the creative ideas of some classic architectures. It is a very important means to improve people's living conditions, under the situations on Chinese urban habitations have had the characteristics of high density and large cubage. According to Chinese practical economy and technology, it is also a way to create the ecologic buildings.On the other hand, some Chinese architects advocate to compose the Chinese traditional residence forms to the "Hanging Garden" creation, and bring forward the "Air Siheyuan Yard" concept. This comportment endue the "Hanging Garden" with a spirit of coming into Chinese traditional residential cultures.Composed to common buildings, the "Hanging Garden" type habitations have more advantages, such as to fit climate, to improve the ventilation and sunshine conditions, to create health and comfort environment, to advance people's aesthetic feeling, etc. On the contrary, it always have some problems such as out of proportion in area.Therefore we should adjust measures to local conditions.This paper reviews the development and design thought of "Hanging Garden" buildings, expounds its functions, forms, the way to organize spaces, ecological design principles and technologies. And then give a farther analyses and arguments through three items of residences engineering project.
