The Flat Dilatometer Test (DMT) possess most of the virtue of other situ tests, i.e., it is easily operated economical, highly reproducible, lowly disturbed and can obtain continuous curves of sounding. Subsequently, it has been widely used in investigation and geotechnical design all over the world. At the present time, The Flat Dilatometer Test has already been used somewhere in our country. However, its application is almost based on the results and experiential formula researched by the other country. Because of the difference between domestic instrument and overseas'and the regionally otherness of geotechnical engineering itself, the foreign results and experiential formulas can not be fully applied in our country. There is a good deal of difference between the soil parameters calculated by foreign formulas and actually situation. Combined with large of DMT results and data by other investigation, based on the differents of research status in quo domestic and overseas. This article will do the following works by analysis data of the Flat Dilatometer Test (DMT) in Nanjing. This article generalized excellence and flaw of the Flat Dilatometer Test and summed up it's applicability in different soils. Then introduced the apparatus,approach and coordination of the data in the Flat Dilatometer Test. At last it summed up the development,application and achievement which had been arrived in the Flat Dilatometer Test all over the world. Based on the Mindlin's solution on elasticity theory, this article got the deformation constant ascertained by the period of the membrane's expanding. Applied the corrected deformation constant into the simulantly elastic analysis in the period of extruded distortion process. Thereby , the theoretical calculating formula of initial horizontal stress σh0 can be obtained, which will afford the theoretical basis for calculating of other soil parameters. With the representative Flat Dilatometer Test , integrating the other in-situ tests and the laboratory in two different geotechnical division in Nanjing. By the contrasts through the partition of the soils through the material index , the calculation of undrained shear strength of saturation soft clay,vertical condensation module of groundsill,horizontal coefficient of earth pressure,horizontal coefficient of subgrade reaction , ulteriorly discuss the applicability of the Flat Dilatometer Test in Nanjing area. As a result the Flat Dilatometer Test (DMT) is a simple, fast and high precision insitu testing technique. It has preferable relativity between the testing results and character guideline of physics and mechanics. At the same time, it presents that a few foreign formulas can't fully apply in our city's soil, so we put forward some opinion of amendation and supplement with a few practice formulas.
