When electric vehicles are charging or running, some accidents may happen. The electric vehicles may be involved in crash, short circuit, battery splitting and leak electricity, heat impact, explosion, burning, and etc. Consequently, the passengers would bear mechanical injury, electric injury, chemical injury, explosive injury, burning injury and etc. So, it is a challenge to EV safety researchers to research and improve the safety of electric vehicles for the reduction of the injuries and economical loss in accidents.The possible mechanisms that the power system of electric vehicles hurts passengers were analyzed in the paper, including electric injury, chemical injury, burning injury, and etc. The reasons that cause these injuries were analyzed in detail. The safety characteristics of the batteries that electric vehicle is in common use, such as excide battery, MH-Ni battery, Li+ battery, and fuel battery, are researched.By means of using the equipments in the automotive laboratory of Hunan University, some testes had been done to research the safety performance of the power systems and its influence on the electric vehicles in the condition of simulating real car running. The discharge characteristics of the power systems were analyzed. Then, a new way for appraising the performance of the batteries had been proposed.Summing up above works, the possible safety accident modes and their testing and protective methods had been built up. A hydrogen density measure system had been developed perfectly.
