During light system load, reactive power of the power system becomes more and more excessive and voltages are too high, this has greatly impacted on the quality of power energy and the safety of equipment. It is a method to adjust voltage by underexcited operation of generator.Based on the analysis of the principle and the limiting factors of the generator underexcitation ,the respective technical measures for underexcitation operation are put forward.Based on the study of the loss-excitatoin protection , a comprise between loss-excitation protection and the limitation of low excitation is provided.In this paper, based on BPA, a software of power system analysis, through the calculations of power flow and transient stability for Zhejiang power system under some typical underexcited operating conditions, the results are revealed that underexcited operation reduces the margin of transient stability of the system. However, it still can be concluded form this paper that to select proper large capacity generators operating under the underexcited condition is an effective and available method to lower the higher voltage during light system load.
