The conceptions of historic garden, conservation and renewal are expounded. By introducing and analyzing the successful examples and effective policies and measures adopted by some foreign countries in this area, the paper proves that conservation is an approach to urban sustainable development, and that only the active renewal based on conservation can lead to a harmonious combination between the historic and modern landscape.On the basis of the detailed study of the historic evolution of Shicha Lake, the landscape characteristics of different historic gardens are analysized, and in the light of landscape's transformation in the course of historic evolution, the paper reaches the following conclusion: the conservation of historic public gardens that have become urban public space should put the emphasis on scientific and prudent renewal through landscape design based on preservation of historic view so that they will be integrated into the modern life. While the conservation of historic private gardens should emphasize the authenticity and entirety, including the preservation of such garden element as space structure, historic architecture and topography, coordination of the relationship between conservation and utilization, and application of laws to guarantee the implementation of conservation. Finally, suggestions are put forward based on different aspect of conservation and renewal of historic gardens.
