In this paper, the structure and performance characteristics of IGBT, as well as requirements of its gate driving and protecting circuit, is firstly analyzed. Then, with the application of CPLD and appropriate hybrid IC M57962AL from Mitsubishi, a novel design and realization for double IGBT module is proposed. With a high driving capability, flexible configuration of functions, easy for adaptation and good suitability, low cost and its comprehensive protection system, including over current, short circuit and power supply voltage monitoring, this circuit can be used for driving medium-large power double IGBT modules. Moreover, detailed analysis on functions and corresponding methods of realization in applying IGBT, including interlock and dead-time control, electrical isolation of signals, fault protection logic, snubber circuit and estimation of power dissipation is also presented. Associating the current application of Hybrid Active Power Filter(HAPF) in our laboratory, Experiments are conveyed and corresponding waveforms are satisfactory, presented at the end of the paper.
